This blog presents a collection of my personal projects of illustration, concept art and matte painting.
I mainly tried to bring out the emotional and communicative aspect without, however, neglecting the technical and realism. I hope you like them. Good vision

MENTION

"I don't think that writers or painters or film makers function because they have something they particularly want to say. They have something that they feel. And they like the art form: they like words, or the smell of paint, or celluloid and photographic images and working with actors. I dont think that any genuine artist has ever been orientated by some didactic point of view, even if he thought he was."
Stanley Kubrick.

THE CASTLE

For this work I used the "old school" technique of matte painting using exclusively Photoshop.
I studied the look and the mood of the castle of Trani (Puglia / Italy), built in 1233, under the kingdom of Frederick II of Swabia. I created a set extension and I have transformed the surrounding environment by adding an imaginary landscape with a waterfall in the middle of the sea.

The castle original plate.

Concept / matte painting - look and mood of an unexplored and dangerous land.

PREHISTORIC LAND

I imagined a landscape of the last glaciation, and I studied the look and the mood. This image was mainly made with Vue Pioneer 2016 and matte painting with Photoshop.

Concept and matte painting - I studied look and mood of a planet beyond our solar system. I was inspired by the movie "Prometheus".

PARIS 2543

This work is a cross between a concept art and matte painting. I have changed several times the scene to study the changes of atmosphere and composition. It documents my study of tonal values, depth, lights, aerial perspective, and photo manipulation with insertion of 3D elements. I also documented the whole process of evolution, from the first ideas until the final scene. It 'very difficult to manage and organize all of these elements. The most important and difficult thing was to look for a proper assembly procedure of the various elements which obey physical and optical laws. I hope to have created a photorealistic effect engaging and illusionistic. The shot was made in 4K Output Size 35mm 1.85: 1 (cinema) - 4000 x 2162 px. In this version, the resolution is 1600 x 865 px.

I imagined Paris in the year 2543 with an alien civilization that has taken possession of the land, and began to build their own architectural and strategic installations.

The shots that I present are different, I would say variations on the theme, which bear witness to the gradual changes and improvements to arrive at the final layout. They represent two different moments: Shot 1 - In the foreground a large hatchway that faces the monumental area of Trocadero, with a person who looks the arrival of a huge cargo spaceship, on the background stand the alien megastructures . Shot 2 - The point of view remains the same, but the action changes with a catastrophic impact of a space ship that hits the top of a gigantic tower, and finally dash on the monumental area of Trocadero creating a huge explosion of smoke and debris.

The mega-structures and the spaceship have been realized in 3D, rendered with V-Ray and later integrated with photo manipulation. Their design is inspired by sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro and illustrator John Berkey. The final look is inspired by the works of the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Of course also Star Wars has inspired the composition of these shots.

The music really helped me to immerse myself in the right mood, in particular: György Ligeti - Lux Aeterna, John Adams - Harmonium, John Towner Williams - Star Wars, soundtrack saga, Jean Sibelius - Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op 82.
